Why Button Design Doesn’t Matter: Debunking the Myth of Web Design Obsession

Should we make the button a bit larger? Would it be better in green? Could we underline the text? Can we add some animation? — Well nobody cares, Karen. It all comes down to ...

Are you tired of endless debates about the perfect shade of green for your website’s buttons? Do you roll your eyes every time someone suggests adding animations or underlining text for better user engagement? Well, you’re not alone, and it’s time to set the record straight: button design is irrelevant.

The Folly of Fixating on Aesthetics

After 15 years in the web design industry, it’s time to call out the Karens of the world who think that tweaking button sizes and colors will magically transform a mediocre website into a sales juggernaut. Let’s face it: a fancy button won’t save a crappy product or service. No amount of flashy design can make up for a lackluster offering. I’ve seen it time and time again – beautifully crafted websites that couldn’t sell water in the desert, and ugly, slow websites that rake in cash hand over fist.

So why do we continue to waste time and energy on button design? Because we’ve been brainwashed into believing that aesthetics trump everything else. We’ve forgotten the golden rule of business: it’s the product that matters.

Sure, once you’ve got thousands of users banging down your digital door, then maybe we can talk about button design. But by that point, you’ve already done the hard work. You’ve built something people actually want. You’re not trying to put lipstick on a pig – you’re fine-tuning a well-oiled machine. And let’s not forget about data and statistics. Yes, they are useful tools for optimizing your website. But they’re not a substitute for common sense. If your product sucks, no amount of A/B testing will save you.

So let’s stop wasting time on trivialities and focus on what really matters: building something worth buying. Let’s channel our energy into creating products and services that solve real problems and add real value to people’s lives. Let’s leave the button design debates to the Karens. We’ve got better things to do.
